RAINS CAUSE LOSS OF 3,000 TONS OF FISH By Luis Ramón Hernández Rodríguez, Cuba Free Press.

VILLA CLARA - The strong rains that caused the Zaza dam in Sancti Spíritus, central Cuba, to spill 6 million cubic meters of water in late October also brought about the loss of about 3,000 tons of fish from hatcheries behind the dam.

Fishermen from Tunas de Zaza, a fishing village on the south coast of the province, said that for weeks one could see dead tench fish floating up to 45 miles out at sea. Alfredo Capó, the director of aquaculture in Sancti Spíritus province estimated that the worst damage was done to the 12 million fingerlings put in the water this year. That does not bode well for future fish populations at Cuba's largest dam.
