DIAZ HERNANDEZ INTERRUPTS HUNGER STRIKE By Ricardo González Alfonso, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - Independent journalist Jesús Joel Díaz Hernández, 25, suspended his 17-day hunger strike July 28 in the "Canaleta" prison in Ciego de Avila province. Three colleagues who joined a fast in support of Díaz Hernández also abandoned their peaceful protest.

Díaz Hernández, director of the Avileñan Independent Journalists' Cooperative (CAPI) made his decision when he learned during a family visit that his mother was in a state of high anxiety.

CAPI members Juan Carlos González Leyva, Julia León Palmero and José Pérez Romo ceased their supporting fast when they learned of the imprisoned journalist's decision, according to Pedro Argüelles from the Cielo de Avila region.

Díaz Hernández on July 12 had resumed an 11-day hunger strike first begun in January.

At the beginning of this year in the course of a single weekend, Díaz Hernández was arrested, judged and condemned to four years internment in a corrections labor camp.
