GOVERNMENT OPPONENTS MEET WITH U.S. DIPLOMAT CHARLES SHAPIRO. By Odilia Collazo Valdés, president of the Pro-Human Rights Party, for Cuba Free Press.

Havana.- A group of opponents of the Cuban government met at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana with Charles Shapiro, the diplomat in charge of the Cuba desk at the U.S. Department of State, on Feb. 9.

Those Cubans present were Gustavo Arcos Bergnes, Vicente Escobar Rabeiro, the writer (Odilia Collazo Valdés), Osvaldo Payá Sardiñas and Elsa Morejón, the wife of Dr. Oscar Elías Biscet, who is in prison.

Shapiro expressed an interest in the Cuban dissidents, the state of repression and the prisons in Cuba and other matters related to human rights. Elsa Morejón made good use of the opportunity to report to him on the state of health of her husband Dr. Biscet. She also reported that on that same day, Dr. Biscet's representatives were filing a petition with the prosecution which has asked for 10 years of imprisonment for the pacifist. Dr. Biscet has been in prison for several months.

The group also discussed the Elián González case and various other subjects of concern to the opposition inside Cuba.
