CARITAS, CHURCH GROUP, AIMS TO GIVE HELP TO THE NEEDY By Jorge Diego Rodríguez Delgado, Cuba Free Press.

HAVANA - The collections made by Caritas will be made public on Sunday, June 6. Church officials say it will show, once again, the extensive generous mission of the Roman Catholic Church.

This task seeks to "help or sustain the elderly, sick, those groups who are most needy and those who come to the western part of the country to look for a better life," according to Cardenal Jaime Ortega Alamino.

The Havana archbishop seemed confident the Church will increase its ability to help the most needy, but he emphasized that all must help reach this humanitarian goal.

"It is necessary, at the same time, for workers to fight for their dignity and for salaries that are just," the cardinal said, noting the many initiatives initiated by the Church to help the poor throughout Cuba.

The statements issued by the Cuban cardinal were published in Here is the Church ("Aqui la Iglesia"), the official news bulletin of Havana's archdiocese.

In all the masses celebrated the preceding Sunday, church authorities emphasized the need for collections to be turned in to the parishes by June 6.
