MARXISM AND FLOWERS FOR SANTIAGO STREETWALKERS By Ariel Tapia, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - In Santiago, a city located 944 kilometers (about 566 miles)from the capital, the first "Rehabilitation Camps for Prostitutes" have already been created. Last week the first secretary of the Communist Party in Santiago province, Juan Carlos Robinson visited one of those centers, in which the internationally known "jineteras" (Cuban slang for "hookers," comes from Spanish "jinete", which means "horserider" or jockey) are forced to participate in study sessions about "Marxist and revolutionary ideology."
Robinson described as "praiseworthy" the work accomplished by those in charge of these camps, who little by little in his own words, "are going to be changing the image that is being held of these girls."
In the camp visited by the communist leader a trade is taught to the former prostitutes, and there are also many working already in the harvesting of flowers.
