POLITICALLY INCORRECT JOURNALIST CONTINUES HUNGER STRIKE By Ricardo González Alfonso, Cuba Free Press.
HAVANA - Politically incorrect journalist Jesús Joel Díaz Hernández, 24, continues a hunger strike he began Jan. 18, causing great alarm among his family members. Some of the latter were allowed to see him during visiting hours for nearly 60 minutes on Jan. 26 at the Canaleta prison in Ciego de Avila province.
They described him as very deteriorated and Pedro Argüelles, Cuba Free Press correspondent, said he was told by one family member that the prisoner "repeats phrases, has his lips extremely dry and neither defecates nor urinates."
Díaz Hernández is the executive director of the Avileña Cooperative of Independent Journalists. Police arrested him Jan. 18 and he was declared guilty the next day. He was sentenced to four years in jail on charges of "being dangerous."
Family members and friends of the journalist expect he will go blind within days if not hours.
