GOVERNMENT DENIES BENEFITS TO A RETURNED RAFTER By Héctor Trujillo Pis, Cuba Free Press.
CAIBARIEN - Prison authorities have denied "benefits" usually provided prisoners to returned-rafter Richard Herrera Santos. He is in the "Guamajal" prison in Santa Clara, serving a prison sentence of 5 years for theft and slaughter of livestock. The "benefits" would include "corrective serevice" and a less severe program in prison.
According to Margarito Broche Espinoza, president of the organization Rafters for Peace, Democracy and Freedom, Herrera Santos, after having been returned to the island, has been kept in prison in a program of medium severity.
Herrera Santos was arrested in 1993, while floating in the open ocean, by a Cuban coast guard vessel and was held in prison three months. He was fined later.
One year later, in 1994, he again failed in an attempt to leave the island through Caibarien - an area of Cuba close to some nearby keys - at that time suffering two broken legs.
