CAPTIVE WORKERS RECEIVE ONE TO 10 PESOS PER MONTH'S WORK By Marvin Hernández Monzón, Cuba Free Press.
CIENFUEGOS - Political prisoners who work at the Ariza jail are paid from one to 10 pesos per month, they report. But, they indicated, the greatest amount obtained by any captive worker was 150 pesos over a period of 24 months.
They work at an enterprise called EMPROVAR making shoes, blankets and mattresses which are later sold to the population for U.S. dollars - hard currency.
According to the information sent to this reporter, each mattress has an average price, in national currency, of 1,000 pesos. Daily production at EMPROVARI averages 3 to 4 units.
The message also says the salary for the non-captives is between 220 and 2240 pesos. The prison employees also have other benefits such as the availability of products in high demand among the outside population.
The prisoners are kept from seeing the payroll or knowing the balance on their accounts but most captive workers at EMPROVARI believe that what they get, meager as it is, is reduced by amounts designated for their living expenses such as food and clothing.
